The ultimate why?

When we ask why anything happens, we usually look to either belief systems like religion or science to get an answer.

It is reasonable to say that science increasingly takes the edge here by offering more logical and implementable explanations.

After all, science is incredibly powerful at explaining how things work, predicting outcomes, and uncovering the mechanisms behind various phenomena. But there is a major boundary when you come down to the building blocks.

Why science has unsurmountable boundaries?

You can ask why for every explanation science offers and it will continue to give answers! But this nature of science means that it takes you to the most fundamental questions, and that's where it struggles.

Science reaches a boundary when it comes to fundamental or existential questions such as-

Why the universe exists at all? Why the laws of physics and maths are what they are? Where did the ingredients of creation like mass and energy come from; and why do they follow precise rules and accurate scientific constants? How did the laws and fundamental constants come into existence in the first place?

These could look like the makings of an existential crisis, but give it a thought. Science uses maths, physics, and logic to explain nearly everything but skips its own origin!

The relevance of belief at the frontiers of science

We can infer that science answers more and more questions as it advances but it has to take the basic qualities of the universe like physics, maths, and logic as assumed. Moreover, there are spiritual experiences like NDEs and FDEs where totally unscientific incidences actually occur.

This is where religion or, more precisely, the belief in God steps in. Spirituality accepts that these basic universal qualities show an apparent intelligence and explains it with a divine power with unlimited power and intellect.

It is not the ultimate explanation, but it does go a step beyond and recognizes that there are some limitations to human science and logic beyond which comes a superior power and intellect. And that maintains the relevance of belief in God no matter how much science progresses!

In fact, scientific progress only takes us closer to the purest form of belief by bringing the focus to what remains unexplained- the ultimate "Why".

What this means?

So, we can say that science and logic clears the doubts about almost every phenomenon to help us reach the ultimate cause. But belief in God takes up the tough job of explaining this ultimate why.

Does belief ace this task? That's debatable, but it does offer enough explanation to let us sleep at night by accepting an ultimate power, or God. It is again an absolute assumption, but it does go a step beyond science and even attempts to give science an origin it lacks on its own.

Here's the Jist

We can infer that belief takes over where science's ultimate explanations end; but both can indeed come together to attempt a complete explanation of the world!

So, we can conclude that we should respect both science and belief in their respective domains. Moreover, it may be time to explore their possible interplay when it comes to the fundamental existential questions.

What do you think? Will science eventually defy its basic limitations and explain its absolute origin; and will it fit our understanding?
